When you are adding item details during the cataloguing process, it is necessary to choose an item type. The list of item types automatically displays in alphabetical order, which can be difficult if a library tends to use one item type the majority of the time.
A simple trick to push a code to the top of the list is to put a space before the first letter of the description. That is instead of it being “Fiction” it is “ Fiction”. This is invisible in normal day-to-day use.
This process can be used to make whatever item type the default choice in the item form, however, in this tutorial we will specifically use “Fiction”.
Go to KOHA administration > Basic parameters > Item types.
This will bring you to a table containing all the item types on your system. These item types can vary from system to system but the list should look something like this:
Click Edit to the right hand side of the item type you want to appear first when cataloguing.
This will take you to a new page with details relating specifically to the item.
Go to the Description field and insert a space at the start of the word.
