How to add a new field to the z39.50 search results

The z39.50 feature allows staff to import a copy of a bibliographic record that has already been catalogued by another library. Initial z39.50 results show a standard selection of fields with information about the returned records, however, it is possible to set additional fields to appear.

Step 1 - Standard fields in the z39.50 results

Results from a z39.50 search will appear with standard fields, as shown in the image below:

While the records themselves will contain more information than what is shown in these standard fields, the fields appearing in the above image provide general information that will help staff to identify the record to be imported.

It is possible to allow additional fields to appear in the search results if there is specific information that staff wish to be able to check quickly, without needing to go into a detailed view of a specific record.

Step 2 - Navigate to the system preference

Go to Koha administration > Global System Preferences and search for AdditionalFieldsInZ3950ResultSearch

This will bring up a system preference of the same name:

This system preference contains a blank box, where the fields to appear in the z39.50 results must be entered. The specific example being used in these instructions is the 245$b field, however the process will be the same for any other MARC field. The field to be added should be inserted with a specific format: the overall field the subfield is associated with, a dollar sign and then the subfield itself. The field being used in this example will appear in the format, 245$b, as shown in the image below.

If there are any difficulties in identifying the MARC field the information to display in the z39.50 results, please contact Interleaf Technology

Once the field has been added to the system preference, click Save all Cataloging preferences.

Step 3 - Z39.50 results with additional fields

To use the z39.50 feature go to Cataloging > New from z39.50.

This will cause a popup box to appear, where specified libraries can be searched.

Select the catalogues to search and use the fields to the left hand side of the page to determine the search terms and hit Search.

This will bring up a page of results within the popup box. Unlike the results that appeared in the image at the beginning of this document, there will be a new column called Additional fields. This column will contain information from the field identified in the AdditionalFieldsInZ3950ResultSearch system preference.

If a record has no content in the identified additional field, then the Additional fields column will be blank.
