How to use a Star rating on the OPAC

It is possible to allow patrons on the OPAC to rate items a certain number of stars. These ratings can then be viewed by other patrons on the OPAC and reported on by staff members on the staff side. For details of reporting on these ratings please contact Interleaf Technology directly or check the Help Centre.

Step 1 - Enable the functionality on the OPAC

Go to KOHA administration > Global System Preferences and search for OpacStarRatings.

This will take you to a system preference of the same name:

This system preferences has three options which determine where on the OPAC the star ratings will appear.

Results and details

This will cause the star rating to appear on the initial search results page and on the page of the specific record. Star ratings will also appear on items in the patron reading history.

Only details

This will show the star rating on the specific record page only.

No

This will disable the ability to add or display star ratings on the OPAC.

Viewing star ratings on OPAC

Star ratings can be viewed without logging in. If the OpacStarRatings system preference has been set to results and details then any existing star ratings will appear after the initial search is completed:

Star ratings will also be visible in the record details page:

If patrons are logged in they will be able to view the star ratings on any items in the your reading history tab on their accounts:

If the OpacStarRatings is set to Only details any existing star ratings will only appear after the initial search is completed.

Adding a star rating

In order to leave a star rating patrons must be logged in. Star ratings will still be visible in the initial search results page and the details page on a record but patrons will only be able to leave star ratings from within the specific record.

In order to leave a star rating roll the mouse over the stars to select how many to give the item and click on the number of stars to give the item. Patrons will be able to see their own rating as well as the average rating the item has received.

It is possible for a patron to change their rating on an item after submitting it by rolling over the star again and selecting a different number to give.
